The 2014 City has been
aggressively redesigned for much sharper edges and much more aggressive look
overall. The 2014 is a little bit bigger than the older models and is
definitely more stylish than any previous models. Honda calls the design
“arrow-like” and we’d have to agree. The front headlights are neatly embedded
into the body, making it look even sharper, with a trio of chrome plates
housing the Honda badge. The slight ribs on the hood give it a more
atheletic feel and the rear is short and high.
Performance
There’s a reason its
called the “City”. It’s 1.5 liter CVT will produce 118 horsepower which is
nippy enough to get around the UAE’s interior roads. Highway driving needs
greater power of course, but it will still perform reasonably well. When you
first press on that accelerator, the power is quick to come and smooth making
this a lovely drive around town. The smaller engine is also very fuel efficient
giving roughly 5.7l/100km, making it easy on the pocket.
Interior
The City’s interior is
basic but slightly boring specially in the center console. Truth be said, the
Koreans probably lead the way in providing striking interiors for low prices,
so the City owners may feel slightly overcharged for what they get. Its
time Japanese brands move beyond their reliability and start offering customers
more for their money we say! Having said that, there are plenty of small
storage spaces in the car and everything seems solidly built.
Comfort & Safety
The car is
surprisingly spacious for its size and will seat 4 adults very comfortably.
Rear legroom is one of the best in class, and the ride is firm but smooth.
There are rear aircon vents as well for the summer days, and there are some
steering wheel controls depending on the trim. The boot is spacious at 506
liters and the rear seats fold down for even greater flexibility. Bluetooth
connectivity and 6 airbags come standard.
Conclusion
The City has its place
in the busy compact segment with its exciting looks but it needs to
work harder under the hood and inside to move customers who might be
tempted by Korean and American offerings.
