The Thin Band Engagement Ring has been one of the most purchased
Engagement Rings in the last few years. The delicate and subtle style of the
thin band seems to be why so many ladies are choosing this design. The great
thing about this design is that it works with anything and often features a
hidden halo or a diamond band. The band paired with a larger stone does let the
main stone take center stage and often is chosen in a two tone design with a
yellow or rose band and white gold crown.
It’s important to determine what makes a thin band and how it compares
to a thicker band. Generally, the average Engagement Ring comes in at a width
and thickness of 1.8mm – 2.6mm, the Thin Band Engagement Ring however will be
much slimmer on average between 1.2mm – 1.5mm.
This means when considering the Thin Band Engagement Ring you
need to ensure you’re prepared for some extra attention. Due to the setting
these rings are more delicate and can bend out of shape if not properly cared
for. It is recommended that the band in these rings be no less than 1.3mm wide
by 1.3mm thick. This will ensure that the delicate band is sturdy enough for
everyday wear. Often in the larger ring sizes it is recommended to have a slim
width but a slightly larger thickness, this ensures the band itself is durable
and able to take the slim width more effectively.
Another thing to consider with a thin band is the style…whenever putting
diamonds on a band you want to ensure you have the correct width vs thickness
to take those shoulder stones. Go with your Jewellers guide here as they will
often know exactly how much width and thickness is needed to get the look
you’re after. A qualified and experienced Jeweller should give honest and
expert advice regarding setting stones on a thin band.
Lastly – engraving. If you wanted to have an engraving or inscription on
the inside band on your Engagement Ring, the thin band is not recommended. Most
Jewellers will advise the ideal width for a clear and legible engraving is
around 2.8 – 3mm.
The thin band is a gorgeous option but when searching for a Jeweller
make sure you check their website and social media for examples and current
designs they have. Make sure they have plenty on show or you’re able to see
their work online. Go with someone confident who has produced quite a few
designs.
