The
Pear cut Diamond also known as the tear drop has been a popular choice for
decades because of its unique and its elongated shape which some ladies prefer
for the old “it makes the fingers look longer.”
Its
extremely important when looking at the Pear to consider what attributes make
some Pears better than others. Due to the elongated shape the clarity and
colour grade are both equally important when considering this cut. Finding a
good balance between the two is the best place to start. It is a general
recommendation to look for anything in the G colour and SI1 Clarity range or
higher for the Pear cut. A qualified Jeweller is the best bet when looking to
get advice on this shape as looking at a certificate alone sometimes isn’t good
enough. Some inclusions are more noticeable than others. A good Jeweller will
know what to look for here and be able to advise against inclusions that are
black compared to clear. Black inclusions in the step cut are easily visible
and take away from the beauty of these cuts.
When
it comes to cut there isn’t a guide like there is with a round brilliant,
however there are some recommendations that typically when followed produce a
great looking Pear. With a length to width ration of 1.40 – 1.50, it’s a good
bet you’ll end up with a excellent cut Pear. The higher the grade in symmetry
and polish the better the Diamond so it’s preferable to have a grade of very
good or excellent here. The Pear much like the Oval relies on the perfect ratio
to get the best length vs width. As mentioned before and generally depending on
how clients want their main stone to look a larger width will produce a wider
look and a longer length will give the Pear a slimmer longer look.
While
this shape has been a classic for decades and is most popular in a solitaire or
with accents it is less expensive than the round brilliant. The Round Brilliant
continues to be the most expensive of all the shapes dueto it’s waste
yield…meaning it uses more rough stone to cut this shape compared to others.
Some buyers have opted for a more ethically and environmentally sustainable
Diamond alternative. The Pear Lab Created Diamond is grown
meaning they are created and not mined making them 100% ethically sourced. When considering the huge social impact
and environmental footprint mining can have, lab grown Diamonds are an ethical
choice and often the only choice for conscientious couples.
Even though the Pear is less expensive than the
high yield round brilliant it is still considerably more than the Lab Grown
alternative which in essence is the same as natural Diamonds. Either way the
Pear is a classic, elegant shape and whether looking for natural Diamonds or
Lab grown Diamonds, this shape will continue to be in style.
